Introducing – Future Cities!

This Fall, five participants from the Octavia Project’s summer institute were selected as Future Cities fellows, and launched a project to co-create an urban planning curriculum for young people.

The Future Cities Project is an exciting collaboration between Octavia Project, Pratt Center for Community Development, and DivComm (American Planning Association NY Chapter Diversity Committee). Funded by a Taconic Fellowship Grant, the project will take place over Fall 2019 through Spring 2020.  The goal of the project is for the five Future Cities Fellows to work with urban planners from Pratt Center and DivComm, and educators from Octavia Project, to co-create an engaging curriculum of activities, workshops and games to teach their peers about the most pressing urban issues.

The project centers social justice and the perspectives of young people, and we are thrilled to work with these five fellows who bring so much knowledge and passion to this work. Over the course of 10 weeks, fellows are learning about urban planning concepts and issues, getting out into communities, testing out existing activities, and thinking critically about how to develop new teaching tools for their peers. Each week, we’ve asked one of the fellows to document what took place in our Saturday sessions, and the next blog posts will document the exciting work of the fellows.
